Irish To Challenge Community To Play, Rally, Act For Peace
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse teams are collaborating with student government and a host of departments across the campus to sponsor the Playing for Peace 3v3 Basketball Tournament this Saturday. The tournament will be held all day in the Joyce Center Field House on the Notre Dame campus. The event is the University’s opportunity to raise awareness and to stand with Sudan for a just and lasting peace.
The tournament will break for the main event of the day, which is the Stand With Sudan Peace Rally at noon in the Joyce Center Field House. The rally is open to the public and to all students, faculty and staff regardless of whether or not they are participating in the tournament. The peace rally involves a unique collaboration of several different University offices; The Center for Social Concerns, Campus Ministry, The Ford Family Program in Human Development Studies and Solidarity, Play Like A Champion and the Alliance for Catholic Education.
Both the tournament and rally are free. The tournament is limited to 128 teams made up of a minimum of three players per team. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. The tournament is co-ed, but individual teams can be comprised of all men, all women or a combination of both. Each team will be guaranteed two games, however the event will be run in a single-elimination format throughout the day until a Playing for Peace 3v3 Tournament champion is crowned.
This event is important to raise awareness about Sudan because on January 9, 2011, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the Government of Sudan in 2005 will expire.
Guest speakers at the event include, former University of Notre Dame President Father Theodore Hesburgh, Notre Dame men’s basketball head coach Mike Brey, Irish men’s lacrosse head coach Kevin Corrigan, Ed Bona (the first African to play Division I basketball) and Joe Touomou (Cameroon native and former basketball captain at Georgetown University). The rally also will feature special talks from University representatives Mike Hebbeler (The Center for Social Concerns,) Jerry Powers (The Kroc Institute,) and Emmanuel Gore (Notre Dame student from Southern Sudan). There also will be special videos from Catholic Relief Services and NBA star Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team continues its fall slate, the Buckeyes, both new and old, had a busy weekend. Friday the current squad and a group of alumni met up on the field, while Sunday the 2011 team, and many current parents and friends of the program, gathered for the annual banquet.
Friday night more than 40 former Buckeyes returned to campus for the alumni game, held at the Harmon Family Football Park. The night opened with the current Buckeyes taking on the alums, and winning, 12-1. That game was followed by the Scarlet vs. Gray Game that saw Scarlet come out on top, 6-5. No. 18 Pioneers Extend Win Streak to Seven With 9-8 Win Over No. 17 Fairfield
For the second straight week, the Pioneers come-from-behind to defeat their opponent by one goal, claiming a 9-8 win over the Stags
HARTFORD, Conn. – For the second straight week, sophomore Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) used a late fourth-quarter goal to seal the win as the No. 18/20 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team (10-4, 5-0 ECAC) defeated No. 17/18 Fairfield University (8-4, 4-2 ECAC) 9-8 in the first game of the Inaugural ESPNU Warrior Classic at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. Denver has now won seven straight games.
Also scoring for the Pioneers was senior John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas), juniors Andrew Lay (Denver, Colo.) and Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.), sophomores Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) and Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.).
“I thought we played a much better game after the first quarter,” said head coach Bill Tierney. “Fairfield really made it difficult for us and took advantage of a lot of our mistakes in the first half, but in the style that we have played in all season long, we found a way to win down the stretch when it counted. A lot of credit for this win needs to go to Chase Carraro, who did an excellent job winning the ball for us on face-offs and getting our offense some really good looks.”
A freshman from Louisville, Ky., Carraro finished the game winning 12-of-19 face-offs and scooping up four ground balls.
Posting his sixth complete game of the season, senior goalie Peter Lowell (Freeport, Maine) made nine saves for Denver between the Pipes, including four in the second quarter.
Denver held the advantage in face-offs, winning 13-of-21, while Fairfield held the advantage in shots (29-23) and ground balls (24-16). Fairfield’s Sam Snow led the scoring efforts for the Stags, scoring three goals and tallying one assist for four points, while Brent Adams added two goals.
Up next, Denver will host No. 7 Loyola University at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 1 p.m. MT. The game will be held after Denver Outlaws training camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
This is the second consecutive year in that the Pioneers will host a game at INVESCO Field. Last season, Denver took part in the Sixth Annual Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown, hosting Notre Dame. Since turning Division I in the 1999 season, the Pioneers have not faced the Greyhounds.
Tickets for the game are on sale at all Ticket Master locations. Fans can also purchase them through www.DenverOutlaws.com or by calling (303) OUT-LAWS. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youths (12 and under).
Pioneer Notes
The win stretches the Pioneers’ winning streak to seven games and improves them to a perfect 5-0 in conference play. The streak began on March 20 with a 13-12 win over Stony Brook and has included wins over Air Force (9-6), Hobart (17-13), Bellarmine (12-8), Quinnipiac (14-10), Ohio State (10-9) and Fairfield (9-8).
The Pioneers are 6-0 when allowing fewer than 10 goals and are 8-0 against teams when winning more face-offs.
Matthews provided both goals to tie the game at 5-5 and at 8-8 and then scored his second game winner of the season with 3:58 left in the game for his seventh straight game with two or more goals. For the season, Matthews has six hat tricks.
Finishing with one point, Demopoulos extended his consecutive games with one or more points to 14 games.

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Junior attackman Andy Warner scored his only goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift host Navy to a 9-8 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins at Navy Marine Corps Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win snaps a 36-game losing streak for the Midshipmen against the Blue Jays that dated to 1974 and improves Navy’s record to 6-7 on the year. Johns Hopkins dropped its second straight and falls to 5-7.
In a game of runs, it was Navy that had the last one as the Midshipmen erased an 8-6 deficit late in the third quarter and held Johns Hopkins scoreless for the final 22:30 to seal the victory.
A Brendan Connors goal with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter ignited the game-ending spree for the Mids. With time winding down in the period, Ryan O’Leary found Connors cutting across the slot unmarked and hit him in stride. Connors wasted little time slipping home his 17th goal of the season to make it a one-goal game entering the final period.
Navy’s only goal of the fourth quarter came at the 9:39 mark as senior Patrick Moran blew home an extra-man goal home from 13 yards out. While neither team scored again until Warner’s game-winner, it wasn’t for a lack of chances. Navy’s R.J. Wickham twice came up with big saves in the final nine minutes of regulation and Johns Hopkins’ Pierce Bassett stuffed Warner in tight less than a minute into overtime.
Wickham then kicked aside a shot by Michael Kimmel with 2:39 remaining in overtime and Navy forced a Kimmel turnover 15 seconds later. Warner’s goal came just over a minute after a Navy timeout and seconds after Nikk Davis missed an open net on a nifty back-door feed.
The Blue Jays had hopped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Kyle Wharton and Kimmel both scored a pair of goals and sophomore Tom Palasek added a goal of his own to spark the game-opening spree. Palasek and Wharton went back-to-back in a span of 17 seconds late in the quarter to fuel the run, which ended with Kimmel’s second goal with just 46 seconds remaining in the period. The Blue Jays outshot Navy 13-6 in the opening 15 minutes, but as quickly as they had crafted the five-goal lead, it was gone.
The Midshipmen needed just 40 seconds of the second quarter to get on the board as Moran dodged hard to the goal and scored from in tight. The margin remained four until midway through the period when Navy erupted for three goals in a span of just under two minutes.
Bucky Smith’s first goal of the season started the three-goal flurry, which was capped by a Joe Lennon goal and included an own goal. A minute before Lennon actually scored his own goal, he was stopped by Basset on a drive to the cage from the side. Hopkins’ Matt Dolente tried to scoop up the loose ball, but instead directed it past Bassett just inside the far post.
A Jay Mann goal with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter and the first of Connors’ two goals on the day with 43 seconds remaining accounted for a 6-5 Navy lead at the half.
In keeping with the first half flow of the game, it was Hopkins’ turn to answer with another run of its own. Palasek slipped inside his defender and scored from in close with 11:30 remaining and senior Steven Boyle dodged from behind the goal and bounced one home to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead with 5:55 on the clock in the third quarter. Palasek completed the first hat trick of his career just over two minutes later, but that would be the last goal of the game for the Blue Jays, who went more than 19 minutes without scoring twice in the game.
Navy got a team-high three points from Wanter (1g, 2a), while Moran and Connors both scored two goals to pace Navy offensively. Wickham, who entered the game ranked second nationally in save percentage, posted eight saves in goal and Navy held advantages in shots (40-32), ground balls (35-21) and faceoffs (13-of-21).
Johns Hopkins was led by Palasek’s three goals, while Boyle (1g, 2a), Kimmel (2g) and Wharton (2g) also registered multi-point games for the Blue Jays, who got a career-high 14 saves from Bassett.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, April 28 when the Blue Jays host Towson at 7 pm. The Blue Jays must win their remaining two games to be eligible for selection to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Teams must have a .500 record to be eligible for an at-large bid to the tournament.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight players found the back of the net and Ohio State scored seven of the last eight goals of the game as the men’s lacrosse team defeated Air Force, 10-6, Saturday afternoon in the Showdown in the ‘Shoe at Ohio Stadium in front of 31,078 fans. The figure set a national record for on-campus and regular-season attendance, a mark Ohio State (7-6, 3-3 ECAC) has set and subsequently broken each of the last three years.
Buckeye leading scorer freshman Logan Schuss led Ohio State with four points off a pair of goals and assists and senior goalie Brandon Freeman made 11 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, giving the team its ninth win in the last 10 meetings with the Falcons (1-11, 0-5 ECAC).
The first quarter ended with a 3-3 tie after James Green and Mike Pires helped Ohio State to a two-goal lead to open the game. Air Force fired back with a pair of unassisted tallies from Zack Carroll and Green swapped scores with the Falcons in the final 5:05 of the period.
Air Force’s run continued into the second as it fired off two more, including a career-high tying third by Carroll, to give the Falcons their first lead of the game but Andrew Stimmel’s goal at the 3-minute mark sparked the Buckeye attack into action. With Stimmel’s score – his first this season – Ohio State started a 7-1 run that would span until game’s end.
Still down 5-4, however, the Buckeyes tied the game off a Jeff Tundo goal from Schuss with five seconds remaining in the half to send the teams into intermission with a 5-5 score.
After a fruitless nine minutes on both sides to open the second half, Paul Gaski scored for the Falcons at 5:44 to regain the lead for Air Force, but the Buckeyes quickly countered and took the game over by the close of the third quarter. Eddie Bambino tied it at six and Mario Ventiquattro scored what would stand as the game-winner with 1:17 to play in the third.
The Buckeyes would go on to add three insurance goals in the fourth with Mike Smail netting his sixth of the season and Schuss adding the final two to extend his team-leading points total to 43 (22g, 21a) this season.
The Buckeyes led the shot count 40-31 and held a 29-21 margin in ground balls.
Ohio State returns to action next weekend, hosting Bellarmine at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium and part of the ECAC Game of the Week series. The Buckeyes remain in the hallowed football stadium because of the Jesse Owens Track Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Postgame Notes
The attendance topped the mark of 30,192 last season and 29,601 in the inaugural event in 2008.
Schuss now has a team-high 21 assists and 43 points and is second with 22 goals. He has at least one point in all 13 of his games for the Scarlet and Gray, with multiple points in all but two.
Green leads Ohio State with a career-best 23 goals and has at least one tally in all 13 games this season.
Tundo is second for the squad with 12 assists and 32 points and ranks third with 20 goals. He is on a five-game scoring streak (9-8-17).
Freeman had double-digit saves for the ninth time this season.
The six goals scored by Air Force matched Ohio State’s opponent season low this season, set vs. Albany and Hobart.
