Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Penn, 7-3
PHILADELPHIA -Pennsylvania scored the game’s first five goals and held off No. 10 Duke en route to a 7-3 victory over the Blue Devils today at Franklin Field. Duke was led by Justin Turri with one goal and one assist for the game.
Duke falls to 1-2 overall on the year, while Penn grabs a win in its season opener. The loss was the first by the Blue Devils on an opponent’s home field since March 24, 2007 at Georgetown. It also marked the lowest scoring output by a Duke team since March 4, 1986 — a 10-3 loss to Maryland.
Christian Walsh and Zach Howell notched the two other goals for the Blue Devils, while Drew Belinsky had a goal and two assists for the Quakers.
Penn got on the board first just over a minute into the game and then held the Blue Devils offense in check. The Quakers added two more in the first quarter, including a fastbreak goal in the final minute, for a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes.
“It’s not so much that it was 3-0 early on, it’s that we were not mentally where we need to be to compete” head coach John Danowski <http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=1385205&DB_OEM_ID=4200> said.
Penn added a fourth goal early in the second frame and went ahead 5-0 a few minutes later. The Quaker defense continued to stifle Duke’s offense forcing turnovers and keeping the Blue Devils attack from getting good shots on goal to take a 5-0 lead at the break.
The Quakers held a 17-9 advantage in shots and won five of seven faceoffs in the opening half. Duke had 12 turnovers and Penn had 10 in the opening 30 minutes.
Looking for its first goal of the game, Duke opened the second half with a goal from Turri 57 seconds into the session. The goal pushed Turri’s point streak to 16 games. Penn responded less than three minutes later as Rob Fitzpatrick netted his second goal of the game.
Both defenses clamped down in the final 11 minutes of the third quarter as neither team got on the board again.
With Penn holding 6-1 lead after 45 minutes of action, Duke tallied two markers in the first 4:35 of the quarter to pull within three at 6-3. Howell netted the first with an assist from Robert Rotanz and Walsh had the second off a pass from Turri. The Blue Devils held the momentum at that point, but just like they had done all day the Quakers responded with a crucial goal to make it 7-3 with 8:31 left to play.
The statistics were even with Penn holding a slight 27-25 edge in ground balls and a narrow 26-24 lead in shots. Both squads won seven faceoffs apiece, with Duke winning 5-of-7 in the second half.
CJ Costabile won 3-of-6 faceoffs and picked up three ground balls, while Terrence Molinari led all Blue Devils with four ground balls. In goal, sophomore Dan Wigrizer made 11 saves. Pennsylvania goaltender Brian Feeney made nine stops in his collegiate debut.
Duke opens ACC play on March 5, hosting Maryland at Koskinen Stadium. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m., on ESPN3.com.

#2 SYRACUSE HOLDS OFF #18 ARMY, 11-9
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 2 Syracuse (2-0) jumped in front of No. 18 Army early and turned back a furious rally by the Black Knights to record an 11-9 triumph on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Carrier Dome. The Orange led 7-0 in the first quarter and 9-3 at halftime. But Army (1-2) closed the gap to 10-9 in the fourth quarter before a goal by senior Jeremy Thompson (Nedrow, N.Y.) with 1:06 to play sealed the game.
“Army kept playing like they always do and their goalie (Tom Palesky) came alive for three quarters,” SU head coach John Desko said. “He played a superb game. Fortunately, we came alive at the end of the fourth quarter, made some things happen and forced them to come out and play us and we were able to put a couple more goals in to seal the deal.”
It was Syracuse’s 15th win in the last 17 meetings with Army and the victory avenged a 9-8, double-overtime loss at the hands of the Black Knights in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore JoJo Marasco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tied his career high with five points (3g, 2a) for the Orange, including his second career hat trick. Redshirt junior Tim Desko (Syracuse, N.Y.) turned in a career performance, finishing with three goals. Thompson and classmate Jovan Miller (Syracuse, N.Y.) also scored twice for Syracuse.
Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders early on. The Orange scored three times in the first three minutes and led 7-1 after the first period. It was a dominating quarter by the hosts. Syracuse outshot the Black Knights, 9-1, and won six of the quarter’s nine faceoffs. Marasco and Desko each scored twice in the period. Marasco’s second goal gave the Orange a 7-0 lead at the 3:31 mark. Finally, Garrett Thul converted a man-up chance on the Black Knights’ first shot of the game with 34 seconds to go in the opening stanza to get Army on the scoreboard.
Miller opened the second-quarter scoring with a laser from 12 yards out to extend the lead to 8-1. After tallies by Jeremy Boltus and Thul, Marasco struck again with 2:34 left before halftime to give the hosts six-goal advantage, 9-3, at the intermission.
Marasco’s goal proved to be the last for the Orange until the fourth quarter. Army’s defense stiffened and held Syracuse without a goal for next 26:43. In the meantime, the Black Knights went on a four-goal run to close the gap to 9-7 with 6:35 to go in regulation. Brandon Butler drew Army within five, 9-4, on a transition goal at the 9:18 mark of the third quarter. Pat Brennan, Tyler Kamide and Rob McCallion all followed with goals to pull the Black Knights within two.
Desko finally stopped the Orange scoring drought with 5:51 to play, increasing SU’s advantage to 10-7 with an unassisted goal. But McCallion found the cage himself with 3:26 left, then connected with Thul for a goal at the 2:15 mark to trim the the SU advantage to 10-9.
After Thul cut it to one, Thompson won the next faceoff and the Orange put the ball in Marasco’s stick to take time off the clock. Marasco successfully evaded the Army defense for more than a minute before being trapped by two defenders. He was knocked to the ground, but rolled the ball to Thompson, who scooped it up and scored to push the SU lead to 11-9. Senior Tim Harder (Garden City, N.Y.) won the ensuing faceoff to give possession to the Orange and Syracuse successfully ran out the clock.
“We worked on that in practice and I tried to stay up top so they couldn’t come up and double me and the goalie couldn’t come out of the net,” Marasco said of the Orange’s last goal. “I was able to move the ball pretty well and protect my stick, but then they came up and doubled me. I tried to stay on my feet as best as I could and Jeremy was there to help me get the ball in the net.”
Orange senior goalie John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered nine saves in the contest, including seven in the second half, to record his 46th career win. He is one shy of tying the Syracuse career wins record of 47 held by Jay Pfeifer. Galloway’s nine stops increased his career saves total to 471, passing Alex Rosier (466 saves) for ninth on SU’s all-time list.
Thul led the way with three goals for Army. McCallion and Boltus also recorded three points for the Black Knights. McCallion finished with two goals and one assist, while Boltus contributed one goal and a team-best two assists. Palesky made nine saves in the cage, including six in the second quarter, to help keep Army in the game.
After Syracuse dominated the statistics early, things evened out in the final three quarters. The Orange finished with a 34-28 advantage in shots and a 28-22 edge in ground balls. Syracuse also won 14 of the game’s 23 faceoffs. The Orange was 6-for-8 at the X in the fourth quarter, including the two crucial wins by Thompson and Harder in the final 2:15 that helped secure the victory.
The Orange closes out its three-game homestand on Friday, March 4 when it hosts top-ranked Virginia at 6 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance and arrive early to the Dome Friday. A large crowd is expected.
Game Notes: Senior long-stick midfielder Joel White (Cortland, N.Y.) collected three ground balls to move into a tie with Mike Powell for 10th on the SU career list with 211 ground balls … The 2011 campaign marks the fourth straight year Syracuse has started the season 2-0 … The Orange held its 13th consecutive opponent to single-digit goals … Desko improved his career coaching record to 9-2 all-time against the Black Knights.
- SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY: NEW YORK’S COLLEGE TEAM -
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The 12th-ranked North Carolina men’s lacrosse team scored four of the game’s final five goals to secure a 10-8 victory over Navy Friday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. A typical Navy-North Carolina duel, fans were treated to an up-and-down game that featured five ties, including three in the second half of play.
“I thought it was a heck of a game,” said Navy head coach Richie Meade. “We gave a great effort, but it’s just tough giving a great effort and coming away with a loss.
“That said, I do?think this game and last week’s game against Loyola will help us in the future. We are a lot better off having played tough games and tough opponents. I think we are playing pretty well, but we have to be able to consistently play at a very high level and become a little more disciplined.”
Both teams put together impressive runs in the opening half of play, including four-straight goals by the Midshipmen that was spearheaded by freshman attackman Tucker Hull (Charlotte, N.C.), who netted Navy’s first goal of the game with just 16 ticks remaining in the opening period. Freshmen Sam Jones (Annapolis, Md.) and Harrison Chaires (Ellicott City, Md.), along with senior Andy Warner (Corning, N.Y.) would all punch in goals for the Mids as Navy built a 4-1 advantage with 7:22 remaining in the first half.
Carolina sliced into the lead on a pretty play from senior attackman Billy Bitter just 32 seconds later. However, Navy took a 5-2 advantage with under six to go when a save by junior keeper RJ Wickham (Penn Yan, N.Y.) led to a fantastic transition goal by the Mids. Wickham sent his outlet pass to second-year defensive midfielder Jordan Seivold (Minnetonka, Minn.) who was off to the races. Sprinting from end to end, he found Jones who targeted a long shot from the left corner.
North Carolina, though, found a hot stick thanks to freshman faceoff specialist R.G. Keenan who was near perfect on the evening. He kept generating possession for the Tar Heels and over the course of one minute and 30 seconds, the Tar Heels scored three goals and knotted up the game at 5-5. The equalizer came from defenseman Ryan Flanagan, who sent his shot right through Wickham’s legs.
Navy wasted little time in breaking the tie coming out of intermission, as Jones perfectly threaded his pass from behind the goal to junior attackman Taylor Reynolds (Babylon, N.Y.) who, despite being triple teamed, fired in his point-blank shot.
The Mids’ lead would be short-lived, however, as middie Jimmy Dunster’s shot on the run managed to catch the inside post, tying the game for the third time at 6-6.
A resilient Navy team fought back to take the lead for a final time in the game when a slide to Warner resulted in an uncovered Hull, who scored for the second time in the game on a two-yarder at the 12:35 mark.
The Mids held the lead for the better part of four minutes, but Carolina rookie Nicky Galasso began taking control of the game, fueling the Tar Heels. First he found Dunan Hutchins cutting in from the left side of the crease to tie the game and then he took a pass from Will Campbell and snuck it past Wickham on a lefty low to low shot. Galasso’s goal at 7:57 in the third was North Carolina’s first lead since scoring the game-opening goal.
Nearly three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Jay Mann (Cockeysville, Md.) sent a hard shot that would be deflected back into play by Carolina keeper Chris Madalon. Reynolds scooped up the ball and spun around to pocket his second goal of the contest and send the game into its fifth tie.
Following a Navy timeout with two minutes to play in the third quarter, middie Pat Foster gave the Tar Heels the lead for good, when he sent a 10-yard shot from a tough angle on the left wing in past Wickham.
Flanagan provided the insurance goal just six seconds into the final quarter, picking up the ball off a faceoff win by the Heels and firing it in for his second goal of the evening.
The Tar Heels dominated the game in almost every category, including winning 18 of the 22 faceoffs. Meanwhile, they owned a 40-28 advantage in shots and a 42-23 edge in ground balls. Neither team scored an extra-man goal, including the Mids who were 0 for 4.
After a slow start to the season, Wickham had easily his best game in goal this year. He made 14 saves and came up with a team-best eight ground balls. He made countless stops for the Mids, including a handful of point-blank saves to keep the Mids alive.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next Tuesday when they open Patriot League play at Lehigh in what will be Navy’s third-straight road game of the 2011 campaign. Brought to you live on 1430 WNAV, faceoff is set for 7:00 pm at Ulrich Sports Complex.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Limestone College men’s lacrosse coach J.B. Clarke has announced the Saints finalized 14-game schedule for the 2011 season. Facing a grueling slate, Limestone will have played six games before their home opener, facing competition from within Conference Carolinas as well as non-league contests against the Deep South, East Coast and Northeast-10 Conferences. Seven opponents on this season’s schedule posted winning records a year ago, four of which were in the final USILA Division II Poll and one of which was a national finalist.
“We are excited about our 2011 schedule” said Clarke. “The challenges are great and have motivated the student-athletes in the off-season conditioning and have led to a terrific pre-season. Scrimmaging North Carolina, Hampden-Sydney and Jacksonville University helped prepare our team to begin the season. Conference Carolinas alone is a strong slate of opponents but adding the out of conference games that we have make this a formidable task. We welcome the challenge and can’t wait to get started”.
Coach Clarke’s inaugural Limestone scheduled was finalized this week when it was announced that the Saints showdown against Le Moyne, a rematch of last season’s NCAA Division II National Semifinal, had been scheduled for Sunday, March 6 at Georgetown Prep. Face-off for that game is slated for 12 p.m.
Limestone opens its season and defense of it’s Conference Carolinas title on Wednesday, February 16 at Lees-McRae (4 p.m.).
