GAFFNEY, S.C. — Limestone College men’s lacrosse coach J.B. Clarke has announced the Saints finalized 14-game schedule for the 2011 season. Facing a grueling slate, Limestone will have played six games before their home opener, facing competition from within Conference Carolinas as well as non-league contests against the Deep South, East Coast and Northeast-10 Conferences. Seven opponents on this season’s schedule posted winning records a year ago, four of which were in the final USILA Division II Poll and one of which was a national finalist.

“We are excited about our 2011 schedule” said Clarke. “The challenges are great and have motivated the student-athletes in the off-season conditioning and have led to a terrific pre-season. Scrimmaging North Carolina, Hampden-Sydney and Jacksonville University helped prepare our team to begin the season. Conference Carolinas alone is a strong slate of opponents but adding the out of conference games that we have make this a formidable task. We welcome the challenge and can’t wait to get started”.

Coach Clarke’s inaugural Limestone scheduled was finalized this week when it was announced that the Saints showdown against Le Moyne, a rematch of last season’s NCAA Division II National Semifinal, had been scheduled for Sunday, March 6 at Georgetown Prep. Face-off for that game is slated for 12 p.m.

Limestone opens its season and defense of it’s Conference Carolinas title on Wednesday, February 16 at Lees-McRae (4 p.m.). Following that game, the Saints will head to Florida for a two-game road swing on Saturday February, 26 at Florida Southern (12 p.m.) and the following day on Sunday February, 27 at Rollins (1 p.m.).

The month of March opens in a huge way on Sunday, March 6 when Limestone squares off against Le Moyne in a showdown of national powers and a rematch of the 2010 National Semifinals. The Saints and Dolphins will meet at a neutral site, Georgetown Prep with face off scheduled for 12 p.m. That contest is followed with one at Mars Hill on Saturday, March 12 (1 p.m.) and then Wednesday, March 16 at Wingate. The latter begins at 8 p.m. and is one of two night games on the schedule.

Limestone’s home opener comes in the eighth game of the season on Saturday, March 19 when the Saints host rival Belmont Abbey (1 p.m.) followed by a visit from St. Andrews Presbyterian on Wednesday, March 23 (4 p.m.). The Saints then return to the road as they travel back to Florida with a clash at St. Leo on Saturday, March 26 (7 p.m.) in the other night game.

The Saints begin the month of April with back-to-back home games on Saturday, April 2 against Queens University (3 p.m.) and Lenoir-Rhyne , a first time opponent, on Tuesday, April 5 (4p.m.). They then close out their pre-conference tournament slate on Saturday, April 9 at Pfeiffer (2:30 p.m.).

The Conference Carolinas tournament semifinals and championship games are for scheduled for Friday, April 15 and Sunday, April 17, respectively, and will be hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.

Limestone will play two more contests following the conference tournament, beginning with a neutral site showdown against Merychurst, a 2007 national finalist, on Saturday, April 23 in Alexandria, Va. (12 p.m.) followed by the regular season finale back at the “The Rock” against Catawba on Saturday, April 30 (1 p.m.)

The NCAA Division II National Semifinals and Championship are scheduled for Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 29, respectively. Times are to be determined.

Limestone has represented its region in the NCAA Division II National Tournament each of the previous 11 seasons reaching the national championship game six consecutive seasons 2000-2005 winning the championship in 2002 and 2000.

High Point, NC- Limestone College was chosen by league head coaches as the preseason favorite in Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse. The Saints are coming off a 2009 season that included a 10-4, (4-1 conference) record and an NCAA Division II semifinal appearance. The 2010 Saints are eager to defend their conference tournament championship title and return to the NCAA tournament for the 11th consecutive year.

As usual, expectations are high for Limestone as the squad is ranked No. 5 in the Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division II national preseason poll and No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Division II national preseason poll.

The Saints will have a strong team on the field, anchored by four preseason All-Americans: defender Spencer Wims, attackman Thomas Langan, midfielder Mike Poerstel, and midfielder Teddy Prager.

Queen’s University of Charlotte men’s lacrosse team has been ranked second in the preseason poll as voted on by conference coaches. For the fourth consecutive year Queens’ men’s lacrosse has been selected in the top three of the coaches’ preseason poll and the selection is a good sign for Head Coach Jim Fritz. “This continued recognition by the members of the conference shows our effort to build a strong, consistent program here at Queens.”

The 2009 Conference Carolinas Regular Season Co-Champions lost some of their key players, including 2009 Player of the Year Steph LeBlanc. The group of returning players is experienced and will make significant contributions while the newest Royals bring depth and talent to the squad.

Belmont Abbey College finished third in the coaches pre-season poll. The Abbey men’s lacrosse team enters the 2010 season with momentum on its side after finishing the year winning four of its last five games and advancing to the Conference Carolinas tournament semifinal for the second-straight season.

The Crusaders return four of their top six scorers from last season, and five of the seven all-conference selections, including Freshman of the Year Austin Whitesell. Senior Dave DiLuigi returns as one of the top scorers and face-off men in the league. DiLuigi racked up 29 points and won 60 percent of his face-offs.

Rounding out the men’s lacrosse preseason poll 4-6 was: Pfeiffer & Lees-McRae and St. Andrews (tied).
