The Game: Johns Hopkins wraps up the home portion of its 2011 regular season as the Blue Jays (10-2) welcome Charles Street rival Loyola (8-3) to Homewood Field for JHU’s annual Homecoming game.

Last Time Out: Johns Hopkins ran its winning streak to five games with a 14-5 win over Navy at Homewood Field last Saturday night. Loyola picked up an 11-8 win against Hobart last Saturday in its final home game of the season.

These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins enters this week’s game against Loyola with an all-time record of 909-293-15 (.753). The Blue Jays own nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 44 national championships.

Series History: Johns Hopkins and Loyola are meeting for the 49th time in a series that dates to a 20-1 Johns Hopkins win in 1939. JHU leads the series 45-3 and the Blue Jays have currently won 11 straight against the Greyhounds. All three of Loyola’s wins in the series came between 1994 and 1999. A complete look at the series history can be found on page 13.

First to 900: Johns Hopkins’ 10-6 win at Towson in the 2011 season opener not only got the season off on the right foot for the Blue Jays, but also made history. The win was the 900th all-time in school history, making Johns Hopkins the first program to record 900 all-time wins. JHU now has 909 all-time wins to its credit.

April Reign: Flipping the calendar to April has usually been a good sign for the Blue Jays, who are 47-7 (.870) under head coach Dave Pietramala in games played in April. JHU is 26-3 at home, 19-3 on the road and 2-1 on a neutral field in April under Pietramala’s guidance.

That’s 616 Games Over .500: The Blue Jays’ all-time record is now 909-293-15 (.753) … that’s 616 games over .500. To put this in perspective: JHU has played an average of just over 15 games per season under head coach Dave Pietramala. Using a 15-game season as a reference, if the Blue Jays posted a 5-10 record for 121 straight seasons, they would still be one game over .500.

Something Has to Give: Both Johns Hopkins and Loyola enter this week’s game riding five-game winning streaks. Neither team has lost a game since the calendar flipped to April.

Family Ties: Johns Hopkins associate head coach Bill Dwan is the older brother of Loyola assistant coach Matt Dwan, who serves as the Greyhounds’ defensive coordinator.

Senior Day: The 2011 Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team will honor its seniors and graduate students during a pregame ceremony before the JHU-Loyola game on Saturday.

Chris Gardner Awards to be Presented: Johns Hopkins will present Chris Gardner Player of the Game awards to a member of both teams at the conclusion of the JHU-Loyola game. Chris Gardner was a member of the Blue Jay men’s lacrosse team before being diagnosed with cancer. He received his treatment at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center before losing his battle in the fall of 1997. Starting with the 1998 season, Johns Hopkins has played one game each season in Chris’s honor. A dollar is added to the cost of all tickets for the game each season with all proceeds benefitting the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Chris’s mom, Kathleen Van Haverbeke, has returned to Homewood every year to present the award to a member of both teams.

Putting the Comeback in Perspective: Maryland led the game against Johns Hopkins 7-2 at the half and 8-3 with less than nine minutes remaining in the third quarter before the Blue Jays rallied for the improbable 12-11 win in overtime. This comeback marked the first time Johns Hopkins has won a game after trailing by five goals since March 18, 2005, when the Blue Jays erased a 7-1 second-quarter deficit and beat Syracuse by, ironically, a score of 12-11.

A Tough Stretch: The game at fourth-ranked Maryland on April 16 capped a month-long run that included games against Syracuse (ranked #1 at the time of the game), Virginia (2nd), North Carolina (4th) and Maryland (4th). All four of those games were decided by one goal with the Blue Jays winning three of the four.

One-Goal Games: Johns Hopkins improved to 39-15 under head coach Dave Pietramala in one-goal games with the win at Maryland. The Blue Jays have won their last three games decided by one goal.

Working Overtime: JHU’s win over Maryland in overtime improved the Blue Jays’ record to 17-9 in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala. JHU had lost three straight overtime games prior to the 12-11 win over Maryland.

Striking the First Blow: Senior Chris Boland opened the scoring for the Blue Jays with an unassisted goal just 45 seconds into last week’s win over Navy. Boland’s goal came on JHU’s first shot of the game and marked the seventh time the Blue Jays have scored on their first shot of the game this season. For good measure, graduate student Ben Smith scored six seconds later on JHU’s second shot of the game.

After 12: The win against Navy gave JHU a 10-2 record. This is the Blue Jays’ best record after 12 games since 2005, when they were 12-0. It also marks the fifth time since head coach Dave Pietramala took over that the Blue Jays have won at least 10 of their first 12 games.

Bassett Stands Tall: Sophomore goalie Pierce Bassett turned in an outstanding performance in the 5-4 loss at Syracuse and came back with another impressive showing against Virginia. The Arizona native posted 16 saves, including 14 in the second half, against Syracuse and came back with 14 saves in the win against Virginia. After battling a stomach flu for two days prior to the North Carolina game (he didn’t practice on Friday or Saturday before the game vs. UNC), he posted seven saves, including one in the final 20 seconds to help secure the win over the Tar Heels. He notched eight saves, including a big one in overtime, in the win at Maryland and eight more in the win over Navy.
Bassett currently ranks third in the nation in goals against average (6.57) and fifth in save percentage (.600).

Dolente Among National Leaders: Senior co-captain and faceoff specialist Matt Dolente continues to rank among the top faceoff specialists in the nation this season. He has won 138-of-206 (.670) and counts a team-high 78 ground balls to his credit. He currently ranks third in faceoff winning percentage and ninth in ground balls per game (6.50).
Dolente enjoyed a tremendous showing against North Carolina as he won a career-high 16 faceoffs (on 22 attempts) and grabbed a game-high six ground balls to fuel the victory. He matched those 16 faceoff wins against Albany (on 20 attempts) and grabbed a career-high 12 ground balls against the Great Danes. In last week’s win vs. Navy, he was 13-of-19 with seven ground balls and also assisted on Ben Smith’s goal early in the first quarter.
For his career he is now 386-of-720 (.536) and ranks fifth in JHU history in faceoff attempts and faceoff wins. He also grabbed the 200th ground ball of his career against Albany and now has 224 to his credit. He needs 11 ground balls to move into the top 20 in school history in that category.

Super Seven: While the Blue Jays may not have any midfielders destined to earn First Team All-America honors this season, they do have seven who have performed steadily throughout the season. The first unit of sophomores John Ranagan and John Greeley and freshman Rob Guida has started all 12 games together thus far, while the second group of senior Mark Goodrich, junior Marshall Burkhart, sophomore Lee Coppersmith and freshman Eric Ruhl has been nearly as productive. Among the seven, only Goodrich is a senior, and even he has a year of eligibility remaining after missing the entire 2010 season with an injury.
The seven have combined for 56 goals and 28 assists in 12 games – an average of seven points per game (4.7 goals, 2.3 assists). As the weather gets hotter, the luxury of having seven experienced and productive midfielders should pay dividends for the Blue Jays.
Below is a closer look at JHU’s top seven middies:

John Ranagan (So.)
14g, 11a (JHU’s leading scorer at midfield)

John Greeley (So.)
10g, 9a	(Goal, assist and point totals already ahead of 2010)

Rob Guida (Fr.)
9g, 1a	(Has started all 12 games)

Eric Ruhl (Fr.)
8g, 2a	(Back-to-back 1g, 1a efforts after missing three games)

Lee Coppersmith (So.)
8g, 0a	(First career hat trick vs. Virginia)

Mark Goodrich (Sr.)
5g, 2a	(Only senior among JHU’s top seven middies)

Marshall Burkhart (Jr.)
2g, 3a	(Key goal in comeback win at Maryland)

Attack Oriented: The Blue Jays got another strong performance from their starting attack of Kyle Wharton, Chris Boland and Zach Palmer in last week’s 14-5 win over Navy as the trio combined for 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Wharton punched up four goals in the win, while Boland added two goals and two assists. Palmer scored once and added a career-high five assists to pace the Blue Jays with six points. The five assists are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Paul Rabil had five in the 2007 national championship game against Duke. The 14 combined points, which came on the heels of a 12-point showing for the trio in the 12-11 overtime win at Maryland, push the combined point total for the three to 106 for the year.
Boland and Palmer are tied for the team-lead in scoring as both have 38 points, while Wharton counts 28 points to his credit. Boland leads the team with 26 goals, while Palmer counts a team-best 21 assists to his credit. Wharton’s four-goal effort vs. Navy moved his season total to 22.

Must be the Speech: Johns Hopkins has outscored the opposition 36-16 in the first quarter this season and 37-21 in the third quarter.

For Openers: Johns Hopkins opened the 2011 season with back-to-back road games at Towson and Delaware. Since the inception of the NCAA Tournament in 1971, JHU has opened a season with consecutive road games just twice before this season (1979, 1987). In each of those two years, the Blue Jays won the national championship.

Streaking: Johns Hopkins is 99-29 in its last 128 regular season games dating back to the end of the 2001 season and 115-36 since the start of the 2002 season.

Poll Position: The Blue Jays check in at number two in the USILA Coaches Poll and number three in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week. The Johns Hopkins Sports Information Office uses the USILA Poll to represent JHU’s official ranking at the time of a game. Prior to falling out of the top 20 of the USILA Poll on April 26 and May 3, 2010 (JHU was receiving votes in both polls), the Blue Jays had been ranked in the top 20 in 367 consecutive polls dating back to the first poll in 1973.

A Half Century: Kyle Wharton played in his 50th career game vs. Siena and classmates Matt Dolente and Tim Donovan joined him in the half century club as they played in their 50th career game against Manhattan. Wharton has played in a team-high 59 career games, while Dolente and Donovan have both played in 57 career games.

State Rivalries: Without question the Blue Jays play one of the most difficult schedules in the nation and a big part of the schedule are the in-state rivalries the Blue Jays have. Including the wins over Towson, UMBC, Maryland and Navy this season, JHU is 52-4 (.929) against teams from Maryland under head coach Dave Pietramala. JHU had won 23 straight games against teams from Maryland until the loss to Maryland last season.

Youth Shall Be Served: It’s no secret that Johns Hopkins lost five players (Steven Boyle (A), Michael Kimmel (M), Matt Drenan (D), Sam DeVore (D), Michael Gvozden (G)) who were mainstays in the JHU lineup over the last four years. The group helped the Blue Jays to a national championship in 2007 and a runner-up finish in 2008. Collectively they combined for 238 starts during their career. Fast forward to 2011 and the makeup of the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team is much different, and much younger. How much younger? The entire 47-man roster for Johns Hopkins this season had a combined total of just 91 career starts to its credit entering the season.

Youth Gone Wild: Johns Hopkins continues to display its youth throughout the lineup as the Blue Jays have featured the same starting lineup in all 12 games – a starting 10 that features six sophomores and two freshmen.
Take a quick look at the JHU scoring charts and the class division is obvious. JHU seniors/grad. students have combined for 58 goals and 22 assists (80 points) through 12 games, while the sophomores lead the way with 51 goals and 42 assists (93 points). Add in 24 goals and seven assists for the JHU freshmen and 55.1% of the team’s goals and 65.3% of the team’s assists have been compiled by players with at least two years of eligibility remaining.

Offense-Defense: Johns Hopkins ranks ninth in the nation in scoring offense (11.33) and third in scoring defense (6.67). JHU is one of just three teams in the nation that ranks among the top 10 nationally in both categories. The Blue Jays are joined on this exclusive list by Maryland and Yale.

Offensive Notes of Interest: Below are several notes about the JHU offense to date:
• The Blue Jays have scored on their first shot of the game seven times this season. • Johns Hopkins ranks ninth in the nation in scoring offense (11.33), second in scoring margin (+4.67), 14th in assists per game (6.25) and 10th in points per game (17.58). • In the last six quarters (plus overtime at Maryland), Johns Hopkins has scored 24 goals. • Johns Hopkins scored 10 goals in the first half against Navy. That’s the most the Blue Jays have scored in the first half of a game since March 1, 2008, when JHU jumped to a 10-1 halftime lead against Princeton in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic. • JHU was held to just two goals in the first half at Maryland, but erupted for 10 in the second half and overtime. • JHU has scored at least two goals in 37 of 48 quarters this season. • In wins against Delaware (18) and Siena (16) JHU scored 16 or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since 2005, when JHU totaled 22 vs. Marist and 19 vs. UMass in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. • JHU’s 18 goals against 16th-ranked Delaware are the most for the Blue Jays against a nationally-ranked team since April 5, 2005, when they punched up 19 against 14th-ranked Albany. • Johns Hopkins’ eight goals in the third quarter against Delaware are the most in a quarter by a JHU team since May 14, 2005, when JHU punched up eight in the second quarter of a 22-6 win against Marist in the first round of the NCAAs.

Defensive Notes of Interest: Below are several notes of interest concerning the JHU defense: • JHU has allowed a total of 80 goals on 356 shots (.225 shooting percentage). • Before allowing 11 goals against Virginia, Hopkins held its first seven opponents to eight goals or less for the first time since 1979. • The Blue Jays rank third in the nation in scoring defense (6.67). • Johns Hopkins has held the opposition scoreless for a stretch of 14 minutes or longer 18 times in 12 games. The Blue Jays have held the opposition scoreless for 10 minutes or longer 27 times. • Johns Hopkins has held the opposition to one goal or less in 27 of 48 quarters this season. • The starting attack units the Blue Jays have faced this season have combined for a total of 26 goals and 24 assists in 12 games (an average of 4.16 points per game). Six of those units have been held to three points or less and only three, North Carolina (5g, 2a), Virginia (4g, 4a) and Siena (4g, 3a), have generated more than five points.

BALTIMORE, Md.—The 10th-ranked >> Duke scoreless for 30 minutes en route to an 8-5 victory over the Greyhounds this afternoon in front of 6,000 fans at the grand opening of the Ridley Athletic Complex. The five goals allowed are the fewest by the Blue Devils this season.

Duke freshman goaltender Dan Wigrizer finished with 12 saves, while seniors Ned Crotty and Max Quinzani paced the offense with a combined nine points. Crotty posted one goal and four assists and Quinzani completed the day with four tallies. He pushes his scoring streak to 52 games and the four goals marks the sixth time this season he has scored at least three goals in a game.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half for the Blue Devils, which improves to 3-3, as it held the Greyhounds to just one goal in 30 minutes of action. Wigrizer was outstanding in the first half, making eight stops.

The Greyhounds scored first with a tally from Collin Finnerty 5:03 into the game. Finnerty finished with a team-high three goals for the game. Duke senior midfielder Michael Catalino responded to even the score with 1:41 left in the quarter, as the two squads headed into the first break knotted at one apiece.

The Duke defense kept the clamps on Loyola’s attack, while the Blue Devil offense started to hit its stride in the second quarter. Senior Steve Schoeffel jump-started a five-goal run that spanned 7:53 just over seven minutes into the frame with his second goal of the season. The assist came from the stick of Crotty, the first of his four on the afternoon.

Crotty registered a marker of his own less than two minutes later on a fast-break pass from senior defenseman Parker McKee. The Blue Devils added two more goals in the final 1:35, including a man-down score from Quinzani, to go in front 5-1 at the half. McKee had a strong all-around outing, finishing with an assist, 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers as an anchor to the defense.

The Blue Devils closed out its five-goal run 10 seconds into the third quarter with a third tally from Quinzani.

Loyola put an end to its scoreless stretch, 5:33 into the third quarter with a score from Cooper MacDonell. The goal was the Greyhounds first in 30:30, the longest stretch this season Duke has held a team scoreless.

The Blue Devil defense continued to hold off the Greyhounds and added one more goal in the fourth quarter to ice the 8-5 victory.

Duke won the ground ball battle, 40-35, but it was Loyola controlling the action at the faceoff X by winning 13-of-17 restarts. The Greyhounds had a 36-28 edge in shots, while Loyola goaltender Jake Hagelin made eight stops. Defensively, Duke held the Greyhounds to just one man-up score on four opportunities.

The Blue Devils return home for their next contest, hosting Penn State on March 20 at Koskinen Stadium. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.

Blue Jays, Greyhounds Meet in Regular-Season Finale For Both Teams

The Game: Johns Hopkins (8-4) closes the regular season at home with the annual season finale against Charles Street rival Loyola (9-4).

A Look Back: Johns Hopkins rans its winning streak to five games with a 12-5 win at Mount St. Mary’s on Monday night. The Greyhounds won their fourth straight with a 16-7 home victory against Hobart last Saturday.

These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins enters this week’s game against Loyola with an all-time record of 890-282-15 (.756). The Blue Jays own nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 44 national championships.

That’s 608 Games Over .500: With the win over Mount St. Mary’s, the Blue Jays’ all-time record is now 890-282-15 (.756) … that’s 608 games over .500. To put this in perspective: JHU has played an average of just over 15 games per season under head coach Dave Pietramala. Using a 15-game season as a reference, if the Blue Jays posted a 5-10 record for 120 straight seasons, they would still be eight games over .500.

Honoring the Seniors: Johns Hopkins will honors its seniors prior to the game against Loyola. Since arriving in the fall of 2005, the current senior class has helped guide the Blue Jays to a 41-19 (.683) record with one national championship (2007) and one national runner-up finish (2008). Johns Hopkins has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the first three years of their career.

Honoring the Past: Johns Hopkins will add nine members to its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night and the nine will be recognized at halftime of the game against Loyola. Among the nine are former men’s lacrosse standouts Franz Wittelsberger `76 and Quint Kessenich `90. Wittelseberger graduated as JHU’s career leader in goals (151) and held that mark until 1995, when it was surpassed by Terry Riordan. He led JHU in goals scored (45) during the Blue Jays’ 1974 NCAA Championship season (1st NCAA title for JHU). Kessenich started in goal at Johns Hopkins from 1987-90 and helped the Blue Jays to the 1987 NCAA Championship. He twice earned First Team All-America honors and remains the only Johns Hopkins goalie to earn All-America honors four times in his career.

Senior Brian Christopher and the eighth-ranked Blue Jays host 13th-ranked Loyola on Saturday at 1 pm.

May Day: JHU is 27-6 (.818) in the month of May under Pietramala, including a perfect 13-0 at Homewood Field. Overall the Blue Jays have won 21 consecutive games at Homewood Field in the month of May. JHU’s last loss at home in May came on May 2, 1992, when Towson dropped the Blue Jays, 14-13, in overtime.

April Reign: Flipping the calendar to April has usually been a good sign for the Blue Jays, who won four-of-five games in April last season to jump-start their run to the national championship game. Including the five wins this season (5-0), the Blue Jays are 41-4 (.911) under head coach Dave Pietramala in games played in April. JHU is 22-2 at home, 18-2 on the road and 1-0 on a neutral field in April under Pietramala’s guidance.

A Brutal Stretch: Starting with the game against Princeton on February 28 and running through the game against Navy (4/18), Johns Hopkins played nine straight games against teams ranked in the top 20.
How difficult is the Blue Jays’ schedule? Consider …
The cumulative record of JHU’s 13 regular season opponents is currently 125-61 (.672).
This week’s game against 13th-ranked Loyola will be JHU’s 10th (of 13 regular season games) against a team ranked in the top 20.
Ony two of JHU’s 13 opponents this season (Towson, Mount St. Mary’s) currently have a record below .500.

Hitting the Century Mark: JHU head coach Dave Pietramala reached a milestone with the 14-9 win over Albany as the victory was his 100th as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays are now 104-29 (.782) on his watch and he is just the third coach in school history to win 100 games (Bob Scott-158, Henry Ciccarone-105).

Petro Earns Career Win Number 125: In addition to recently earning his 100th win as the head coach at Johns Hopkins, Dave Pietramala grabbed the 125th overall coaching victory of his career with the 15-7 win over Navy. He enters this week’s game against Loyola with an overall record of 127-46 (.734). This includes a 23-17 record in three seasons as the head coach at Cornell (1998-2000).

Poll Position: Johns Hopkins enters this week’s game against Loyola ranked eighth in the USILA Coaches Poll. The Blue Jays are also ranked sixth in the Inside Lacrosse/Nike Media Poll. Loyola is ranked sixth in both polls.

More Poll Position: Records indicate that the USILA began sponsoring a weekly coaches poll during the 1973 season. Since then there have been 356 weekly polls. Amazingly, Johns Hopkins has been ranked in the top 20 in all 356 of those polls and has been in the top 10 in 344 of the 356.
Below is a breakdown of the Blue Jays in the USILA Coaches Poll since its inception on March 19, 1973:

Total Weeks:	356
Total Weeks at #1:	102
Weeks in top 5:	276
Weeks in top 10:	344
Weeks in top 20:	356
Most Consecutive at #1:	14: 4/12/04-5/9/05
Most Consecutive in top 5:	130: 3/19/73-3/23/87
Most Consecutive in top 10:	158: 3/19/73-3/25/90
Most Consecutive in top 20:	356: 3/19/73-present

Poll Notes: In some years a preseason poll was not conducted • In some years a preseason poll was conducted, but the second poll of that season may have been held until after several weeks of the season passed • In some years a poll was conducted after the NCAA Tournament.

Lucky Number Nine: Years ending with the number nine have been kind to the Blue Jays since the program’s inception in 1883. Johns Hopkins has played 13 seasons in years ending in nine (including 2009) and has compiled a 97-23-2 (.8030 record with seven national championships in those 13 years. The Blue Jays also played in the 1989 national championship game and advanced to the final four in 1999.

Streaking: Johns Hopkins is 81-20 in its last 100 regular season games dating back to the end of the 2001 season and 96-25 overall since the start of the 2002 season.

Attack Emerges: With the loss of standouts Paul Rabil and Stephen Peyser at midfield, it was no secret that the Blue Jay offense was likely to become more attack oriented. While the group was held in check in the losses to Princeton and UNC, it has more than held its own thus far. Starters Steven Boyle, Kyle Wharton and Chris Boland have combined for 10 or more points five times in nine starts together and nine or more points six times in those nine games.
Wharton currently leads the team in goals (28) and points (37), while Boland is second in goals (23) and points (36) and third in assists (13). Boyle, who sat out the game at Mount St. Mary’s, ranks fourth in points (33) with 18 goals and 15 assists. Since Boland entered the starting lineup against UMBC, the starting trio has combined for 51 goals and 29 assists (8.9 ppg.) in the nine games they’ve started together.
The 105 points the starting attack unit has generated this season in 12 games is already eight points more than JHU’s three starters on attack – Boyle, Kevin Huntley and Michael Doneger – combined for last season in 17 games.
Wharton, Boland and Boyle are currently among the top four scorers on the team. The last time JHU’s top three scorers were all attackmen was in 2001, when Bobby Benson, Adam Doneger and Conor Ford led the way.

Young Guns: A year ago the Blue Jay offense was a senior-laden group that was led by Paul Rabil, Kevin Huntley, Stephen Peyser and Michael Doneger, who combined for 108 goals and 34 assists. Fast forward to this season and the experience has been replaced by youth. Through 12 games, 102 of the Blue Jays’ 142 goals (71.8%) have been scored by players who will return next season, while 70 of the team’s 86 assists (81.4%) have been accumulated by players with at least one year of eligibility remaining. Taking a look at the top of the scoring charts magnifies the Blue Jays’ youth even more:

JHU’s top four scorers (Kyle Wharton-37, Chris Boland-36, Michael Kimmel-36, Steven Boyle-33) have combined for 142 points this season. All four are due to return in 2010.
JHU currently has five players with 17 or more goals (Kyle Wharton-28, Chris Boland-23, Brian Christopher-21, Steven Boyle-18, Michael Kimmel-17). Four of the five are due to return in 2010.
Five players on the team currently have 10 or more assists (Michael Kimmel-19, Steven Boyle-15, Chris Boland-13, Brian Christopher-10, Kyle Wharton-9). Four of the five are due to returning 2010.

Defensive Notes of Interest:
After allowing a total of 30 goals in back-to-back losses to Syracuse and Virginia, the Blue Jays have allowed a total of just 50 goals in their last six games (UNC/Albany/Maryland/Navy/Towson/MSM).
JHU held Mount St. Mary’s scoreless for stretches of 14:27 and 20:34. The five goals allowed against the Mount are the second fewest JHU has allowed this season (Siena-3).
Since the start of the 2007 season the Blue Jays have held the opposition scoreless for a streak of 14 minutes or longer 46 times. JHU has turned this trick nine times this season.
The Blue Jays have held 22 of their last 34 opponents – including 13 of 17 last season – scoreless for a stretch of at least 18 minutes.
Hopkins has held the opposition scoreless for 25 minutes or longer 14 times since the start of the 2007 season, including seven times last season.
Despite allowing 10 goals againt Towson, the Blue Jays held the Tigers scoreless for stretches of 12:30, 11:37 and 11:20. The Tigers were also a combined 1-of-15 shooting in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Johns Hopkins held Navy scoreless for stretches of 17:16 and 12:48.
Johns Hopkins held Maryland scoreless for a stretch of 20:02 from late in the third quarter until the final minute of the fourth.
Johns Hopkins held Albany scoreless for streaks of 20:32 and 11:32. The streak of 20:32 is the second longest scoring drought for an opponent this season.
Despite the loss, Johns Hopkins held North Carolina scoreless for stretches of 13:18 and 11:08.
Johns Hopkins held Hofstra scoreless for stretches of 16:49, 11:56 and 11:21 in the 12-7 victory against the Pride. The Pride scored consecutive goals just once (late in the first quarter) against the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins held Siena to just three goals in the season-opener. That’s the fewest JHU has allowed in a season-opener since 1982.
The Blue Jays held Siena scoreless for the final 45:50 and limited the Saints to just six shots in the second half, including none in the third quarter.

Offensive Notes of Interest:
While the focus of any Dave Pietramala-coached team will always be defense, the Blue Jay offense has also been effective. Consider:
Johns Hopkins enters the game against Loyola ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense (11.3), seventh in the nation in points per game (19.0) and ninth in assists per game (7.16). The Blue Jays’ offensive numbers are even more impressive when you look at the national scoring defense leaders. JHU has played six of the top 10 and nine of the top 19 schools in the nation in scoring defense.
Despite the heavy losses mentioned earlier on offense (Paul Rabil, Kevin Huntley, Stephen Peyser, Michael Doneger), the Blue Jays are actually averaging nearly 1.5 goals per game more than they did when they advanced to the national championship game last year (10.53) and won the national championship in 2007 (10.47). In fact, the 11.8 goals per game the Blue Jays are averaging this season are the most for JHU since 2004 (12.13).
JHU has scored in double figures 28 times in its last 35 games and is averaging 11.23 goals per game during that time (393 goals in 35 games).
The 15 goals the Blue Jays scored against top-ranked Virginia are the most by Johns Hopkins against a team ranked in the top five since March 20, 2004, when JHU knocked off then third-ranked Syracuse, 17-5.
The Blue Jays have scored 142 goals on 427 shots this season for a shooting percentage of .333. As a team the Blue Jays scored on 31.2% of their shots last season (179-of-573). JHU connected on 28.8% of its shots en route to winning the national championship in 2007. The Blue Jays’ highest shooting percentage in the Pietramala era came in 2003, when they connected on 31.7% (224-of-706) of their shots. The last time JHU connected on better than 33% of its shots was in 1993 (211-of-607 /.348).

Kimmel Joins Elite Club: Junior Michael Kimmel is enjoying the finest season of his career and one of the finest seasons by a midfielder in the nation this season and has established himself as a legitimate contender for the the McLaughlin Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top midfielder.
Kimmel currently ranks second on the team in points (36), leads the team with a career-high 19 assists and ranks fifth on the team in goals (17). He also ranks fourth on the team in ground balls (26), has totaled two or more points in 10 of 12 games this season and has 14 points in his last four games (6g, 8a).
With his recent surge, Kimmel has joined an exclusive club at Johns Hopkins, one which counts just three members. With his 35 points this season, Kimmel is just the third midfielder in school history to total 30 or more points as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He joins four-time First Team All-American Del Dressel and three-time First Team All-American Paul Rabil as the middies in JHU history to turn this trick.
Kimmel enters this week’s game against Loyola with 97 career points (53g, 44a).

One-Goal Turnarounds: With the 11-10 double overtime win at Towson, Johns Hopkins is 33-11 in one-goal games since Dave Pietramala took over in 2001. The Blue Jays have won 20 of their last 27 and 24 of their last 32 one-goal games. In the five seasons prior to Pietramala arriving (1996-2000) the Blue Jays were 5-8 in one-goal games.

More One-Goal Notes: The Blue Jays have come from behind to win 17 times during their last 20 one-goal wins. In 11 of those 17 come-from-behind one-goal wins the Blue Jays came back from a deficit of two goals or more. The latest of these come-from-behind one-goal wins came at Towson (4-22-09), when the Blue Jays trailed by as many as four (twice) in the third quarter. The four-goal deficit is the largest JHU has overcome to win a game since March 18, 2005, when the Blue Jays erased a 7-1 deficit and defeated Syracuse 12-11 in overtime.

Extra, Extra: Last week’s 11-10 double overtime victory at Towson snapped a four-game losing streak in overtime for the Blue Jays. JHU is 14-6 all-time in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala’s guidance and won seven straight overtime games from 2004 through 2007 before dropping three straight games in OT last season and one earlier this year at North Carolina.
