#11 UMass Lax Tops #13 Ohio State, 11-9
Minutemen get two goals from four different scorers.

Colin Fleming had his second two-goal game of the season at home.

Feb. 26, 2011

AMHERST, Mass. – The #11 UMass men’s lacrosse team moved to 3-0 with a solid 11-9 win over #13 Ohio State on Saturday at Garber Field. Four different Minutemen scored two goals including freshman Connor Mooney, who scored the first two goals of his career in the final five minutes to seal the win. Anthony Biscardi, Colin Fleming and Art Kell also added a pair. Greg Rushing won sensation on face-offs winning 12-of-17 and scooped up a career-high 11 groundballs. Ohio State (3-1) suffered its first loss, a week after upsetting then-No. 3 North Carolina.

After falling behind 2-0 less than six minutes into the game, UMass reeled off three goals in a row to take a 3-2 lead with 9:45 left in the second quarter as Kell scored back-to-back goals.

Ohio State would tie the game at 3-3 and 5-5 — early in the third quarter. But Fleming scored consecutive goals on long blasts to regain a two-goal advantage at 7-5 with 1:00 left in the third quarter. Mike Fetterly notched his second goal of the season with 18 seconds left in the third to extend the lead to 8-5.

Hudson, Ohio native Bobby Tyler — playing against his homestate team — then finished off a fastbreak 1:16 into the fourth quarter for his first-career goal and a 9-5 edge.

The final exclamation points came from the stick of Mooney who netted his first two career goals, 57 seconds apart in the final minutes to close out the win.

The defense in front of Tim McCormack (6 saves) was strong again, limiting the Buckeyes to just 21 shots. UMass forced OSU into 18 turnovers with Jake Smith cauing four turnovers. The defensive midfield was strong all afternoon as well with key play from Rushing, Tyler, Ryan Hollenbaugh, Stephen Zorkers, Mael Walkowiak and Casey Rahn.

Rushing helped UMass to winning 15-of-23 on the draws as Anthony Toresco (3-of-6) also contributed.

Sophomore Will Manny extended its scoring streak to 17 games with a second-quarter goal.

UMass returns to action on Saturday as Brown comes to Garber Field for one of the oldest rivalries in New England lacrosse. Face-off is set for 1 p.m., on March 5 and the game will be televised on CBS 3 Now in Western Massachusetts.

MLAX: Buckeyes Begin Season with Win over Detroit, 4-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team opened the 2011 season with a 4-3 victory against Detroit Thursday night inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Ohio State defense limited Detroit to just three goals and 16 shots, with freshman goalie Greg Dutton making six saves in his first career game. Buckeye senior Tyler Dolphin had the gamewinner in the fourth quarter, breaking a 3-all tie, set up by classmate Zach Boyt.

Ohio State has a quick turnaround, as it hosts Mercer at 1 p.m. Saturday in Woody Hayes Athletic Center. A video webcast of the game will be available for a fee through Buckeye Vision on OhioStateBuckeyes.com, with live stats also available on the site.

“Defensively we played a great game. I’m proud of the way our freshman goalie played,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “Offensively we have a lot of work to do. We kind of allowed what they were doing to get to us a bit. We had some great shooting opportunities and scoring opportunities and just didn’t capitalize.”

The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 after the first quarter. Sophomore Nick Liddil found the back of the net for his first career goal and point, opening the scoring just 1:13 into the contest. Detroit scored twice in the final 4:31 to tie the game and take the lead. Matt Gregson deadlocked the score at 1, followed by a goal from Tim Lehto at 2:18. Detroit goalie A.J. Levell had four saves in the quarter.

Sophomore Logan Schuss scored a man-up goal, assisted by classmate Dominique Alexander, with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter to send the teams into halftime tied at 2-all.

At 9:26 of the third Schuss found Smail, who scored from the right of the cage to put Ohio State ahead, 3-2. The Buckeyes held the lead until Alex Maini tallied off a rebound for the Titans with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

Seniors Zach Boyt and Tyler Dolphin combined for the gamewinner, with Dolphin scoring with 4:44 remaining in regulation.  Detroit took a timeout with 2:37 remaining and the Buckeyes’ Keenan Ochwat forced a turnover, allowing the Buckeyes to clear the ball into the offensive zone and run the clock down to hold on for the win.

Ohio State outshot Detroit, 23-16, in the contest. Both starting goalies played all 60 minutes. Freshman Greg Dutton started the game for the Buckeyes and made six saves in his first collegiate game. Levell had eight stops for the Titans. The three goals allowed by the Buckeyes were the fewest since an 8-2 victory over Quinnipiac March 28, 2009.

Rookie Shawn Kaplan took all 11 faceoffs for the Buckeyes, winning six.

Ohio State converted one of four man-up chances and held the Titans scoreless on five opportunities.

>> MLAX: Ohio State Lacrosse Sets Attendance Record In 10-6 Win Over Air Force

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight players found the back of the net and Ohio State scored seven of the last eight goals of the game as the men’s lacrosse team defeated Air Force, 10-6, Saturday afternoon in the Showdown in the ‘Shoe at Ohio Stadium in front of 31,078 fans. The figure set a national record for on-campus and regular-season attendance, a mark Ohio State (7-6, 3-3 ECAC) has set and subsequently broken each of the last three years.
Buckeye leading scorer freshman Logan Schuss led Ohio State with four points off a pair of goals and assists and senior goalie Brandon Freeman made 11 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, giving the team its ninth win in the last 10 meetings with the Falcons (1-11, 0-5 ECAC).
The first quarter ended with a 3-3 tie after James Green and Mike Pires helped Ohio State to a two-goal lead to open the game. Air Force fired back with a pair of unassisted tallies from Zack Carroll and Green swapped scores with the Falcons in the final 5:05 of the period.
Air Force’s run continued into the second as it fired off two more, including a career-high tying third by Carroll, to give the Falcons their first lead of the game but Andrew Stimmel’s goal at the 3-minute mark sparked the Buckeye attack into action. With Stimmel’s score – his first this season – Ohio State started a 7-1 run that would span until game’s end.
Still down 5-4, however, the Buckeyes tied the game off a Jeff Tundo goal from Schuss with five seconds remaining in the half to send the teams into intermission with a 5-5 score.
After a fruitless nine minutes on both sides to open the second half, Paul Gaski scored for the Falcons at 5:44 to regain the lead for Air Force, but the Buckeyes quickly countered and took the game over by the close of the third quarter. Eddie Bambino tied it at six and Mario Ventiquattro scored what would stand as the game-winner with 1:17 to play in the third.
The Buckeyes would go on to add three insurance goals in the fourth with Mike Smail netting his sixth of the season and Schuss adding the final two to extend his team-leading points total to 43 (22g, 21a) this season.
The Buckeyes led the shot count 40-31 and held a 29-21 margin in ground balls.
Ohio State returns to action next weekend, hosting Bellarmine at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium and part of the ECAC Game of the Week series. The Buckeyes remain in the hallowed football stadium because of the Jesse Owens Track Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Postgame Notes
The attendance topped the mark of 30,192 last season and 29,601 in the inaugural event in 2008.
Schuss now has a team-high 21 assists and 43 points and is second with 22 goals. He has at least one point in all 13 of his games for the Scarlet and Gray, with multiple points in all but two.
Green leads Ohio State with a career-best 23 goals and has at least one tally in all 13 games this season.
Tundo is second for the squad with 12 assists and 32 points and ranks third with 20 goals. He is on a five-game scoring streak (9-8-17).
Freeman had double-digit saves for the ninth time this season.
The six goals scored by Air Force matched Ohio State’s opponent season low this season, set vs. Albany and Hobart.

The game will be aired on tape delay on the Big Ten Network beginning at 10 p.m. Friday.

RECORDS WATCH
With two assists vs. Vanderbilt April 12, senior Kelly Haggerty broke the all-time record for career points at Ohio State. The West Chester, Pa., native now has 131 goals and 93 assists for 228 points, passing Kristen Slahor’s 221 (82g, 139a) earned during the 2005-08 seasons. Haggerty is second all-time in career goals and assists, needing eight and 46, respectively, to eclipse the leader in each category.

DYNAMIC DUO
Kelly Haggerty and Alayna Markwordt are one of the most successful scoring duos in NCAA lacrosse. The pair has combined for 118 points, the sixth-most among Division I scoring tandems. Haggerty leads the Buckeyes with 30 goals and 32 assists, while Markwordt – the reigning ALC rookie of the year – is second with 35 goals and 21 assists.

MARGIN OF VICTORY
In games won, the Buckeyes have outscored their opponents 136-65 – a 71-goal difference and an average of 8.9 goals per game. Their largest win this season came against Cincinnati, 20-5, April 14 – the largest margin since exactly a year ago to date against Detroit (21-4).

ANNIE GET YOUR SAVE
Heading into the week, junior goalie Annie Carruthers led the ALC in saves per game (11.0) and save percentage (0.525) and is ranked third and fourth in the NCAA, respectively in the two categories. The Columbus Academy product made a career-high 22 saves against Northwestern March 24 and has had at least 10 in seven games this season. With 145 on the year, she is fifth all-time in single-season saves and needs nine to tie the fourth-place Megan Barnett and her 154 tallied in 1999.

DEFENSIVE DIVA
Maghan Beaudrault leads the team with 23 caused turnovers this season – nearly twice as many as her closest teammate (Gabby Capuzzi, 12). Her 1.77 caused turnovers per game ranks 30th in the NCAA and third in the ALC.

RANK AND FILE
The Buckeyes re-entered the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll at No. 20 April 5 for the first time since the March 1 edition and have since moved up two spots to No. 18. After being limited to receiving votes beginning Marsh 8, Ohio State has gone 5-3 with its losses coming at the hands of top-ranked and undefeated Northwestern, No. 10 Vanderbilt and No. 18 Penn State.

GONE STREAKING
Two Buckeye attackers hold point-scoring streaks of at least 20 games. Kelly Haggerty has notched at least one goal or assist in each of the last 31 games – the 17th-longest active streak in the country – while Alayna Markwordt has posted points in 27-consecutive games.

BIG GAME, SMALL SCREEN
Buckeye lacrosse made its debut on Big Ten Network last weekend with the Penn State game. The Notre Dame matchup Thursday will be streamed live on BigTenNetwork.com and then shown on tape delay on the television network at 10 p.m. April 23. The games will air intermittently throughout the week; check local listings for times.

SCOUTING THE IRISH
Notre Dame rides a four-game winning streak coming into Columbus Thursday, including two victories over ranked opponents in No. 7 Syracuse and No. 13 Loyola. The defense, led by goalkeeper Ellie Hilling, has been the deciding factor as it has only allowed 10 goals over the last three games. As a team, the Irish are 16th in the nation, giving up 9.08 goals per game. Jackie Doherty leads the Irish in ground balls (43, 3.31 per game) and caused turnovers (30, 2.31 per game) to also top the Big East in both categories.
On the attack, Gina Scioscia’s seven-point game (3g, 4a) in the team’s last outing vs. Cincinnati gave her a team-leading 39 points off 24 goals and 15 assists. Two others – Kailene Abt and Maggie Tamasitis – have more than 30 points, coming in at a tie for second with 33.

SERIES HISTORY
Notre Dame and Ohio State will meet for the 15th time in the all-time series with the Buckeyes narrowly trailing 6-8 through the first 14 games. In the last meeting between the teams, Feb. 22, 2009, in South Bend, Notre Dame came away with a 14-11 win. Rachel Hawes, Jayme Beard and Gabby Capuzzi each netted hat tricks, while goalie Kristen Gilwee notched 17 saves in the loss.

LAST TIME OUT
It was a tale of two halves as the No. 19 Ohio State women’s lacrosse team built a first-half lead but fell to No. 18 Penn State, 18-12, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium last Sunday. Brittney Zerhusen and Alayna Markwordt paced the attack as the Buckeyes moved to 8-5 on the season and 1-3 in the ALC. Coming off a record-setting performance against Cincinnati Wednesday, Zerhusen finished with three goals and an assist, while Alayna Markwordt also posted four points with two and two. Annie Carruthers tallied 11 saves, including two on free-position attempts, and marked her seventh game this season with at least 10 stops between the pipes.

COMING UP NEXT
The Buckeyes close out their home schedule at 1 p.m. Sunday against Detroit. Five seniors will be honored – Laura Burke, Lindsey Burkhart, Rachael Cornicello, Kelly Haggerty and Lauren Sterner – for their four years at Ohio State. The Titans are 6-10 on the season and coming off back-to-back losses to LeMoyne and Longwood.
