Junior Keith Lovett forced a turnover in the Buckeye zone and rushed the ball upfield, sending Dalgarno in on the Irish net for his record-tying goal. Ventiquattro added his second of the game at 6:45, set up by Ryan. Notre Dame got on the board when Zach Brenneman tallied at 4:24. Shots were 12-9 in favor of the Irish in the first quarter.

The Irish tied the game with just one second remaining when Christmas found the back of the net on a rising shot from a sharp angle. Ohio State was outshot in the quarter, 11-6, with Freeman making five saves.

All-time, UNC leads the series, 13-1. The teams have met each of the last three years and in eight of the last 11 years overall.

The Last Time – OSU vs. UNC
The Buckeyes overcame a halftime deficit, scoring the first three goals of the second half, to upset then-No. 8 North Carolina April 12, 2008 in Baltimore, Md. Kevin Buchanan led the Buckeyes with five goals and seven points in the win, the Buckeyes’ first over the Tar Heels in program history. Mario Ventiquattro had a hat trick in the victory, with Jeff Ryan posting three points on two goals and an assist. Goalie Stefan Schroder had 14 saves in the win.

A Look at the Tar Heels
North Carolina enters the game Saturday 8-4 on the year, including a 7-1 mark at home. The squad is 0-3 in ACC action. UNC is coming off an 11-10 loss to No. 1-ranked Virginia last Saturday in a neutral-site game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Pat Myers, a four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes from 2000-03, is in his first year as the chief assistant for the Tar Heels, joining Breschi’s staff in the summer. Myers is the younger brother of Buckeye first-year head coach Nick Myers. Pat Myers began his coaching career as the Buckeyes’ volunteer coach in 2004.

Take a Break
The game Saturday is the Buckeyes’ final non-conference game of the season and is in the middle of a stretch of GWLL contests. Ohio State opened league play 2-0 with wins over Quinnipiac and Bellarmine and will face Air Force, Denver and Notre Dame to close out its league slate after this weekend.

De-Fense!
The Buckeye defense has held opponents to nine or fewer goals in each of its last four games and ranks 11th nationally in scoring defense, giving up 7.5 goals an outing. The squad kept Detroit Mercy to just one goal in the season opener and held Quinnipiac to just two goals March 28.

It is the first time the team held opponents to three goals or fewer twice in a season since 2004, when Ohio State downed Marist, 11-3, and defeated Air Force, 9-2.

Noting No. 16
Senior Joel Dalgarno is first on the squad with 16 assists and 37 points this year and shares the goal-scoring lead with 21. He had four goals at Bellarmine last week, his third four-goal game of the season.

Dalgarno, a Tewaaraton finalist, now has 203 career points, remaining second in program history. The all-time leader is Terry Gilmore, who had 250 points from 1976-79. Dalgarno has 114 goals to stand in second place in program history, behind Gilmore who ranks first with 123. Dalgarno is third in assists with 89, trailing Cliff Murray (1966-68) in second with 97 and Gilmore in first with 127.

Dalgarno, who has ranked in the Top 2 in the league in scoring each of the last two years, leads all GWLL players in points per game (3.7), ranking ninth nationally. He is second in the league in assists per game (1.6), standing 16th in the nation. He is tied for third among league players in goals per outing (2.1).

On the Road Again
The game vs. North Carolina Saturday is the second of four-consecutive for the Buckeyes away from Columbus. The team will travel to Colorado next weekend to take on Air Force April 17 (note new gametime of 4 p.m.) and Denver April 19.

The Buckeyes will return home to host Notre Dame April 25 in Ohio Stadium in its final regular-season game of the year.

Save!
Junior goalie Brandon Freeman ranks second in the GWLL and 15th in the nation with a 7.74 goals-against average. He has a .565 save percentage, ranking 23rd in the NCAA and third among league goalies. Freeman has started all 10 games this year after spending the last two seasons backing up All-American Stefan Schroder.

A Helpful Group
The Buckeyes are sixth in the nation in assists per game, averaging 7.44 an outing. The squad has 67 assists on 92 goals this year.

Ryan Routine
Senior Jeff Ryan, in his third year as a Buckeye, ranks 23rd in program history with 108 career points, with 73 goals and 35 assists. He shares the team lead with 21 goals this season and has 33 points on the year after a four-point game, with two goals and two assists, at Bellarmine last week. Ryan is second among GWLL players with 3.3 points a game this season and is tied for third in goals per contest (2.1).

Ryan has at least one point in each of his last 12 games and has two or more points in all but two games this year.

A Helpful Group
Ohio State ranks sixth in the country in assists per game with an average of 7.2 an outing. The squad has 75 assists in 103 goals this season. Twenty Buckeyes have at least one assist on the year.

On the Scoresheet
Freshman Eddie Bambino made his first career start at Bellarmine last week. He had a goal and an assist vs. the Knights for his first helper and two-point game with the Scarlet and Gray. Bambino has a goal in four of his last five games.

A First
Sophomore Zach Boyt’s goal at Bellarmine last week was his first point as a Buckeye.

Pires Plows Ahead
Sophomore Mike Pires is on a six-game scoring streak, with eight goals and two assists for 10 points over the stretch. He had a five-game goal-scoring streak ended at Bellarmine but ranks fourth on the squad with 13 points this year.

Super Mario
Junior Mario Ventiquattro, who has at least one point in each game this year, is third on the team in goals (15) and points (23). He has multiple points in six of nine games this season and is just three points shy of the career-best 26 he had as a sophomore a year ago.

By Larry Watts

Joel Dalgarno refuses to look ahead.
With only a handful of matches remaining before the Great Western Lacrosse League Playoffs, it would be easy for the Ohio State senior attackman to think about the upcoming professional drafts. The Major Lacrosse League (outdoors) will be conducting its draft May 27 while the National Lacrosse League (indoors) will hold its draft in September.

image001.jpg

Joel Dalgarno is the second leading scorer in Ohio State history.

“It’s been my dream to play professional lacrosse,” Dalgarno says, “but for now I am only focused on what I can do to help Ohio State win.”
The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia native has been doing his fair share to help the Buckeyes win during the past four seasons. With 203 points, he has already locked up second place on the Buckeyes’ all-time scoring list. One of 30 finalists nationwide for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, he stands second in career goals (114) and third in assists (89).
“To be honest, I don’t look at any of those records,” he says. “If I can help my team win by scoring points, then I’m happy to do that. If I score a goal or get an assist, I know there are other guys on the field helping me do that. I know this is a team effort.”
Dalgarno made an instant impact at Ohio State as a freshman, when he was named the GWLL Newcomer of the Year. He has scored at least a point in every match during his career, except against North Carolina last year.  “But we won the match and that was the most important thing,” he says. “Our team played an unbelievable game.”

According to Dalgarno, “I’ve had a stick in my hands, either lacrosse or hockey, since I was a baby. Hockey was my first love, but as I got older I knew lacrosse would be my best chance of getting a scholarship.”  Dalgarno was raised on playing box (indoor) lacrosse. Box lacrosse, which Canada adopted as its national summer sport in 1994, has five field players (compared to nine in the outdoor game) and is primarily played in indoor rinks when the ice is removed.

“It’s a very different game than playing field lacrosse,” he says. “There are a couple of different rules and there’s more intensity because you’re in close quarters. It’s pretty aggressive and there’s a lot of fighting involved. Growing up playing hockey has helped me in the physical aspects the sport presents.”

During the summer, Dalgarno plays club lacrosse with the Maple Ridge Burrards in the Western Lacrosse Association. His brother Austin, who is two years older, plays in the same league with the Langley Thunder.  “I really don’t have a favorite between the two styles of lacrosse,” he says. “I like the flow of the outdoor game and the ability to set up plays. I enjoy the openness and freedom to operate.”

In order to sharpen his game and pursue a college scholarship, Dalgarno left his high school in Port Coquitlam, a 30-minute drive from Vancouver, to play both lacrosse and junior hockey at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio for his final two years.

“It was very tough leaving home,” he says. “But my family and friends were all very supportive and it turned out to be a good transition because
Western Reserve had a tremendous support staff and there were other Canadians in my dorm.

The decision to come to Western Reserve Academy paid off in a number of college opportunities. Dalgarno took visits to Stony Brook (N.Y.), Loyola (Md.) and Hofstra, but the lure of playing on the East Coast didn’t measure up to what Ohio State had to offer.

“The coaching staff, the chemistry of the players, the facilities and what Ohio State stands for with its tradition was just something I couldn’t pass up,” he says. “I knew right off the bat I wanted to come here.”

The fact Ohio State has had a number of Canadian players come through its system was an added bonus. Dalgarno is one of four players from north of the border currently on the Buckeye roster.

“I think we give the team a good mix,” he says. “We add a little diversity to the lineup with our backgrounds and it gives us a chance to change the pace of the game with our unique style of play.”
When he does manage to get back home, Dalgarno likes to take advantage of the beaches in the summer and the ski slopes during the winter.

“I basically grew up on a mountain and I’ve been skiing since I was little,” he says. “I really got into snowboarding about eight years ago, but the coaches don’t know that.

“I plan on eventually going back to live in the Vancouver area. All my friends and family are back there and I really enjoy the all-around aspects of life back there.”

But before he can return to his roots, there are still a few matters to take care of in the United States. Right at the top of his list is completing his degree in consumer affairs.

“I still have to come back and take a few courses next fall,” he says. “I never did any summer school because I had to work and play lacrosse. But I plan on coming back to Ohio State next fall to help coach the players during the offseason.”
Due to the state of the economy, Dalgarno isn’t looking forward to using his degree for a career in sales. He is even toying with the idea of becoming a firefighter back home.

“My brother just completed his training school and it’s something he really enjoys and something my father has enjoyed,” he says. “I have some friends who are firefighters and they have nothing but good things to say about it. The idea of helping people on a day-to-day basis is something that appeals to me.”

But there’s also the matter of those two lacrosse drafts on the horizon.

“I really don’t know about my chances of getting drafted,” he says. “If one league drafts me, I’ll be very excited. I’d like to get a chance to play in both leagues. But for now, I’m just trying not to think about anything but finishing out this season in the right way.”

Ryan found sophomore Dan Bain at 8:07 to put the Buckeyes on top (7-6) and Bambino scored unassisted four minutes later. Ruhnke assisted on a score by Mario Ventiquattro with 1:59 left in the quarter, sending the teams into the final stanza with Ohio State ahead, 9-6. The Knights outshot the Buckeyes, 11-6, in the quarter.

Dalgarno tallied the Buckeyes’ 10th goal of the game unassisted 1:42 into the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 10-6. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Knights in the fourth.

In the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 35-26, with each goalie making eight saves. Junior Brandon Freeman played 60 minutes and allowed seven goals for the Buckeyes. Bellarmine’s Scott Bowles gave up 11 goals in 60 minutes.
