MLAX: Dalgarno Scores Four as Buckeyes Down Bellarmine, 11-7

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first of four-consecutive games away from Columbus, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team downed Great Western Lacrosse League foe Bellarmine, 11-7, Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. Senior Joel Dalgarno had a team-best four goals in the win to pass the 200-point mark in his Buckeye career, with classmate Jeff Ryan adding two goals and an assist for three points.

The Buckeyes improve to 6-4 this year, with a 2-0 ledger in league play. Bellarmine drops to 6-5 and is 0-3 in conference action. The teams were tied three times in the game Saturday, including 6-all early in the third quarter, but Ohio State outscored the Knights, 5-1, over the final 28:09 to secure the conference win.

After allowing the first two goals of the game, the Buckeyes went on a five-goal run to lead 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. Bellarmine’s Jarrett Davis opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the game and Sean Doyle tallied at 12:12 to put BU ahead, 2-0. Ohio State tied the game with two goals in 36 seconds. Sophomore Bryce Woodson set up Dalgarno at 8:59 and sophomore Mike Pires found Ryan at 8:23, knotting the score at 2-all. Freshman Eddie Bambino, in the first start of his career, set up Zach Boyt for his first career goal at 6:29, putting the Buckeyes in the lead for the first time (3-2). Ohio State scored twice in the final 1:23 of the quarter, with Dalgarno scoring unassisted and Ryan tallying with just two seconds left in the stanza. Each team had nine shots in the quarter.

Bellarmine went on a run of its own in the second quarter, scoring three times in 1:41 to tie the game again (5-5). Dereck Hopcroft scored two of the three goals, tallying at 9:16 and 7:37, sandwiched around a Doyle goal at 8:06. Senior Doug Ruhnke regained the Ohio State edge (6-5) with a goal at the 4:12 mark of the stanza. The Buckeyes were outshot in the quarter, 8-5.

Bellarmine tied the game once more (6-6) when Doyle tallied 1:51 into the third quarter. The Buckeyes then rattled off four-consecutive to take control of the game, holding the Knights to just one goal over the final 28:09. Ryan found sophomore Dan Bain at 8:07 to put the Buckeyes on top (7-6) and Bambino scored unassisted four minutes later. Ruhnke assisted on a score by Mario Ventiquattro with 1:59 left in the quarter, sending the teams into the final stanza with Ohio State ahead, 9-6. The Knights outshot the Buckeyes, 11-6, in the quarter.

Dalgarno tallied the Buckeyes’ 10th goal of the game unassisted 1:42 into the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 10-6. Trevor Timmerberg had the Knights’ final goal at the 7:39 mark and Dalgarno scored his fourth of the game with 4:34 left on the clock for the 11-7 final. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Knights in the fourth.

In the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 35-26, with each goalie making eight saves. Junior Brandon Freeman played 60 minutes and allowed seven goals for the Buckeyes. Bellarmine’s Scott Bowles gave up 11 goals in 60 minutes.

Ohio State was 0-for-4 on EMO chances in the game, including 0-for-3 in the first half. Bellarmine had just one extra-man chance and did not convert.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State will travel to Baltimore next week to take on North Carolina at 1 p.m. Saturday in a neutral-site game at Calvert Hall College.

Dalgarno, who leads the Buckeyes with 16 assists and 37 points and shares the team goal-scoring lead with Ryan with 21 each, had his third four-goal game of the season. He is second in the Buckeye record books in both career goals (114) and points (203) and ranks third all-time in assists (89). He is just the second Buckeye to hit the 200-point mark, joining Terry Gilmore, who had 250 from 1976-79.

Ryan shares the team goal-scoring lead with 21 and is second with 32 points. In his third year with the squad, he is 23rd in Buckeye history with 107 career points (73g, 34a).

Bambino was making the first start of his Buckeye career. He had a goal and an assist for his first two-point game for the Scarlet and Gray.

Boyt’s goal was his first career point.

Pires is on a six-game scoring streak (8-2-10).

Ventiquattro, who has at least one point in each game this year, is third on the team in goals (15) and points (23).

Buckeye Dalgarno a Top 10 Finalist for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior attackman Joel Dalgarno has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior Class Award, the organization announced Thursday. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition. Dalgarno and the nine other finalists were selected from a list of 30 candidates.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages those leaders to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact on their circle of influence.
Fan voting is available now online at seniorclassaward.com, with fan balloting accounting for one-third of the final vote. The remaining two-thirds is determined by NCAA Division I coaches and national media members. You can also vote for Dalgarno by sending texting “LAX5” to 839863.
Dalgarno, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, is a team captain for the Buckeyes this year and is on the 2009 Tewaaraton Watch List. The Buckeyes’ leading scorer this year, he was an honorable mention All-American a year ago, is a two-time first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League selection and was the 2006 GWLL Newcomer of the Year. He has started every game of his Buckeye career and ranks second in career points and goals and third in assists. Dalgarno, who is expected to earn his degree in Family Resource Management: Consumer Affairs this spring, is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
The Buckeyes return to action with a game against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. It marks Senior Day for the 10 members of the 2009 Ohio State senior class.




MLAX: Buckeyes Drop 9-8 OT Decision to No. 6 UMBC

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a career-best 14 saves from junior goalie Brandon Freeman, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 6 UMBC, 9-8 in overtime, Saturday at UMBC Stadium in Baltimore. It marks the fourth time in the last five meetings the Buckeyes and Retrievers have needed overtime to decide a game.

The Buckeyes, who were down 4-0 after the first quarter, battled back to tie the game in the third when they outscored UMBC, 2-0. Ohio State held a brief lead early in the fourth quarter before the Retrievers went on a three-goal run to go back ahead, 8-6, Ohio State then got goals from James Green and Mario Ventiquattro, both assisted by Joel Dalgarno, to knot the score at 8 with less than three minutes remaining. In overtime, UMBC won the faceoff and controlled the ball until Alex Hopmann scored his fourth of the game, coming on the only shot of OT, to give the Retrievers the win.

Dalgarno had a team-best two assists and three points, with Jeff Ryan and Green each scoring twice. Senior Nick Carr won 10-of-15 faceoffs in the game.

UMBC led 4-0 after the first quarter, with three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Matt Latham scored at 13:56 to open the scoring. Alex Hopmann tallied man-up at 11:27 and Kyle Wimer found the back of the cage one minute later. Hopmann scored his second of the game with 1:07 remaining in the quarter. UMBC controlled the action in the quarter, outshooting the Buckeyes, 11-1.

Ohio State drew within one with the first three goals of the second quarter. Green scored unassisted at 12:27 and Dalgarno followed with a goal at 8:11. Mike Pires cut the UMBC lead to one (4-3) when he scored with 4:41 remaining. Latham put UMBC back up by two with a goal, set up by Wimer, at 1:50. UMBC led, 5-3, at halftime. Each team had nine shots in the quarter.

Ohio State scored the only two goals of the third quarter to tie the game through three stanzas. Jeff Ryan tallied just 58 seconds into the quarter. The teams were scoreless until Buckeye freshman Eddie Bambino scored his third of the year with 1:08 left, tying the game at 5-all. Buckeye goalie Brandon Freeman made six saves in the quarter, as UMBC outshot Ohio State, 10-7.

Ryan put Ohio State ahead for the first time 14 seconds into the fourth quarter after the Buckeyes on the opening faceoff, with Keith Lovett assisting. UMBC responded with three-consecutive goals to go ahead, 8-6. Hopmann scored at 14:10 before Peet Poillon (man-up) and Latham scored 26 seconds apart, at 8:26 and 8:00, respectively. Dalgarno set up James Green for a man-up goal at 6:42, making the score 8-7 and then found Mario Ventiquattro  at 3:13, knotting the score at 8-all. UMBC outshot Ohio State, 9-5, in the quarter, with Freeman making two saves.

In overtime, UMBC won the opening faceoff and controlled the ball. Hopmann was able to convert the only shot of overtime at 2:44, lifting the Retrievers to the win.

UMBC outshot Ohio State in the game, 40-22. Freeman played 61:16 and had 14 saves for the Buckeyes. Jeremy Blevins saw 61:16 for the Retrievers in the cage and had six saves.

Ohio State converted 1-of-3 extra-man chances in the game, with UMBC 2-for-5.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State continues its spring break trip when it heads north to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Buckeyes will return home to host Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Dalgarno now leads the Buckeyes with 14 assists and 30 points. He is second for the Buckeyes in career goals (109) and points (196) and third in assists (87).

Ryan has a team-best 18 goals and has 70 goals, 32 assists and 102 points in his career, tying for 24th in program history in career points.

Freeman has double-digit saves in five of seven starts this year and topped his previous high of 12, set against Navy earlier this year.

Lovett’s assist was his first point as a Buckeye.
