The try out for the Swedish National Lacrosse team was held during the last weekend in October. Twenty nine players has been selected for the training roster that will continue to practice together until April when the finalized team of 23 players will be picked.

“We are thrilled by the dedication and level of intensity we saw during the two days of scrimmage,” said national team head coach Hans Johnson.

“Lacrosse is a small sport in Sweden, yet we have performed very well internationally through the years” said Coach Johnson, “and we think the formula for that is athleticism and solid work ethic, qualities that all the selected players share.”

The core of the team consists of a number of experienced players that represented Sweden in the European Championships in Lahti in 2008, where Sweden ended up in fourth place after losing the bronze game against Germany. Among the 12 returning players will be 2008 team captains Johnny Axelsson, Benny Axelsson and Kim Langeborg.

“We rely a great deal on the leadership and experience from our three captains,” said assistant coach John Sagrelius, “but we also have a number of new talented players that will add new energy to the team.”

Midfielders Tomas Rydenstam, Sten Jernudd and Kevin Powers are among the players that will be representing Team Sweden for the first time.

“All three are great two-way midfielders that can run, shoot and play defense,” said Sagrelius.

Team Sweden has placed fourth in the last two European Championships. The last time the team participated in the World Championships was in Perth, Australia in 2002, positioning Sweden ninth.
