DU Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Ohio State, 16-10
Eight Pioneers score but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Buckeyes at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium
DENVER – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team (7-7, 1-3 GWLL) fell 16-10 to visiting Ohio State (7-6, 3-1 GWLL) on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,516 fans at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Sophomore Andrew Lay (Denver, Colo.) and freshman Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) led Denver with two goals apiece, while six other Pioneers also contributed. Senior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games as he scored his 24th goal of the season to start the third period.
Denver opened up the scoring just 49 seconds into the game as Lay scored an unassisted goal, his 10th of the season. The Buckeyes evened up the score just minutes later as Jeff Ryan slipped a James Green pass by Denver goalie.
The Pioneers answered right back with two quick goals from senior Kyle Widerstedt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Lay to take a 3-1 lead with 8:34 remaining.
Ohio State then went on a five-goal run that spanned from the 7:51 mark of the first period to the 13:40 mark of the second period to take a 6-3 advantage. The Pioneers then added two goals to pull within one of the Buckeyes. Junior Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) scored his 13th goal of the season with 11:26 remaining and freshman Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) scored a man-up goal for his eighth of the season with 8:19 remaining.
Ohio State continued to add to its lead as it scored the next three goals in the final six minutes of the half.
Murray opened up the scoring in the third period, adding his 24th of the season on a pass from Dickenson. Junior Ben Wahler (Denver, Colo.) then followed it up with his third goal of the season on an unassisted shot to bring the Pioneers within two goals, the closest Denver would come to Ohio State the rest of the game.
Matthews added the only other score for the Pioneers in the third period as he drilled a pass from junior Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.) past the Buckeyes goalie. Mathews then added his second of the game, 21st of the season as he scored on a pass from Demopoulos.
Junior John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) added the final score of the Pioneers for the game with 11:12 remaining in the fourth, tallying his sixth goal of the season.
Ohio State held the advantage in shots 40-38, while the Pioneers scooped up 45 ground balls compared to the Buckeyes’ 32 ground balls. Denver also held the advantage in face-offs, winning 19 of 29.
Denver returns to action on Saturday, April 25 as it hosts GWLL opponent Air Force at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in its final home game of the season. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the Pioneers will honor all their seniors prior to the start of the game.
